Mr Edward Courtney is a Consultant Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon based in Bath at the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust, also undertaking private consultations, procedures and surgery at Bath Clinic.

Mr Courtney qualified in medicine at Leeds University Medical School in 1996, subsequently completing his basic surgical training in centres across Hull, Canterbury and London. He later undertook a research post at St George's Hospital surrounding colorectal polyps. He presented his work at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in Chicago, USA in 2005 and was awarded a MD for his work in 2006. Mr Courtney later completed his higher surgical training in centres across East Anglia, including Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital.

After receiving his certificate of completion of training in 2011, he completed a year long surgical fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal at Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand. He was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust in 2012.

Mr Courtney has clinical interests in all aspects of colorectal surgery. He sees patients with a broad range of lower GI conditions, including the following:

• Appendicitis

• Hernia

• Haemorrhoids

• Pilonidal disease

• Colon cancer

• Rectal cancer

• Rectal prolapse

• Gallbladder disease

• Inflammatory bowel disease

He regularly performs colonoscopies and has expertise in several laparoscopic surgical procedures including appendicectomy, cholecystectomy, sigmoidoscopy and abdominal surgery. Mr Courtney is dedicated to providing the best possible care for his patients and always takes time to thoroughly explain all treatment options as clearly as possible.
