Mr Blackburn graduated with distinction from Imperial College School of Medicine in London in 1999. He also won the British Physiological Society's undergraduate prize after completing his BSc (Hons) degree in physiology. He undertook his basic surgical training at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, before his starting his plastic surgery training at Wexham Park, St George's, Charing Cross, Chelsea and Westminister and the Newcastle Hospitals.
Mr Blackburn has won a number of awards during his career, including the prize for the best cosmetic surgery paper in 2008 in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery for his paper on the importance of listening to and understanding patients. He was awarded the Bruce Bailey microsurgical fellowship in 2010 and spent two months in the Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India - one of Asia's biggest trauma hospitals.
