About Dr Michael Talbot

Dr Talbot graduated from Otago University in 1993 and undertook his Intern year in Wellington NZ, before moving to Sydney's St Vincents Hospital. After his early training years he joined the South Eastern Sydney Surgical Training program in 1996 and undertook post-fellowship training at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He started as an Upper GI, Endoscopic and Bariatric, and General Surgeon at St George and Wollongong Hospitals in 2003, before consolidating to St George in 2005. During his career, he has been involved in a number of major changes in surgical practice that have subsequently become commonplace. 1) Endoscopic management of Upper GI cancers. Introduced in 2003, prior to endoscpic guidelines being introduced in 2010. 2)Minimally invasive resection, rather than open abdominal and chest cavity incisions for gastric and oesophageal cancers that are not suitable for endoscopic treatment. First laparoscopic procedures in 2003. Dr Talbot performed the first Robotic Oesophageal cancer resections in ANZ, as well as other first Robotic cases. 3) Early adoption of keyhole sleeve and bypass surgeries. While several surgeons in Australia were commencing keyhole sleeve and byass surgeries at the same, its likely that Dr Talbot was the first to reach 100 in each procedure. St George Private Hospital, has had a "leak" or infection rate of less than 1 in 500 since the first case in 2003, and has had a longterm, continuous audit of safety and quality of bariatric surgery of over 20000 patients over the last 18 years. This represents a world class team effort rather than something that can be attributed to any particular individual. 4) Therapeutic endoscopy for benign and malignant conditions. There are only a handful of clincians in Australia who perform both surgery and endoscopy for these conditions and Dr Talbot has over a decade of experience in POEM, G-POEM, C-POEM, STER, ESD, EMR, ERCP and their surgical equivalents. This allows him to select a procedure thats best for the patient rather than what suits the Doctor. 5) Tertiary/Quaternary referral for management of leaks, perforations and functional complications after anti-obesity, anti-reflux and upper GI cancer surgeries. Largest NSW experience in this patient group. 6) Robotic surgery. Dr Talbot performed the first Upper GI Robotic cases in ANZ on the Da Vinci and Hugo and Single port platforms. He performs Robotic surgeries on a weekly basis. Single Port surgery allows patients the opportunity to experience "scarless" surgery. 7) Reflux and oesophageal diagnostics. Dr Talbot set up the first modern "High resolution" oesophageal diagnostics lab in NSW, and has investigated swallowing and reflux symptoms in over 5000 patients since then. 8) Current practice in gallstones, weightloss, reflux, hernia and second opinions. He is available for F2F appointments in Wollongong, St George and St Vincents. Telehealth available. Surgery is performed at St George Public and Private Hospitals, St Vincent's Private, Hurstville and Orange. 9)Academic surgery. > 70 publications in peer-reviwed scientific journals and >200 presentations at local and international surgical and medical conferences in Australia, New Zealand, America, Europe and Asia.

"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
