About Dr Michael Edward Farrugia
Dr Michael Farrugia is an experienced Consultant Dermatologist based in Edinburgh, offering specialist dermatology care at Nuffield Health Edinburgh Hospital, Spire Shawfair Park Hospital, and Lauriston Building within NHS Lothian. After graduating from the University of Malta in 2012, Dr Farrugia completed his foundation medical training in Oxford before moving to Edinburgh, where he undertook specialist dermatology training between 2016 and 2020. Dr Farrugia provides expert diagnosis and treatment across the full spectrum of adult and paediatric dermatology. His clinical practice includes the management of skin cancer, with specialist expertise in dermatoscopy assessment and surgical treatment of malignant and pre-malignant lesions. He also treats severe eczema and psoriasis, including patients requiring advanced systemic therapies such as oral immunosuppressants and biologic treatments. He has extensive experience in the treatment of acne in adolescents and adults, including the use of isotretinoin where appropriate, as well as autoimmune and inflammatory skin disorders such as cutaneous lupus, lichen planus, chronic urticaria, and hidradenitis suppurativa. In addition, he provides paediatric dermatology care for children with eczema, rashes, birthmarks, and skin growths. Within his private practice, Dr Farrugia also assesses and treats a wide range of benign skin lesions including seborrhoeic keratoses, sebaceous cysts, skin tags, and benign moles. He performs comprehensive full-body mole checks using dermatoscopy, helping with the early detection of skin cancer and providing reassurance for patients concerned about changing moles. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Farrugia has a strong commitment to education and training. He holds a postgraduate qualification in Clinical Education and is actively involved in teaching medical students, mentoring dermatology trainees, supporting pharmacist prescribers and advanced nurse practitioners working within dermatology teams, and preparing junior doctors for dermatology specialty interviews. Dr Farrugia is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and a member of the British Association of Dermatologists together with several specialist dermatology interest groups. He has presented research at both national and international conferences and has contributed to peer-reviewed publications and dermatology textbook chapters.
