About Mr Matthew Murray-Downing
Matthew Murray-Downing has extensive physio experience - from high-pressure NHS roles to the world of international sport currently in F1 and Olympic gymnastic team - he is passionate about applying these principles to the full spectrum of physiotherapy goals patients he treats may have. He works between private practices in London and Chelmsford as well as consulting to Redbull Formula 2, and British Gymnastics.
Having obtained a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy at the University of East Anglia, he began his career in a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapy role, treating NHS patients in Suffolk, and went on to gain experience in a range of hospital and community settings before moving onto private practice and international sport.
He has a wealth of clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions as well as a broad spectrum of injuries - from common lower back pain to pre/post operatively orthopaedic injuries. He is also trained in sports massage, kinesis-taping and shockwave therapy. More recently he has completed further education to become a strength and conditioning coach to add to his performance coaching role.
Applying clinical expertise to a passion for sport, Mr Murray-Downing has also secured roles treating elite sports professionals. Currently, he is working in Formula 2 as Performance Coach to a Red Bull Junior Driver, which involves international travel and the application of specialist knowledge to a high-pressure environment. Furthermore, he also manages some of Team GB's gymnastics team and is currently in preparation for the Paris Olympics and previously worked with Norwich City Football Club and the Oxford Boating Team. Working in high-performance sport has allowed him to develop a range of treatment modalities - including manual therapy, strength and conditioning, and performance coaching - which he brings to bat at Chelmsford Physio, supporting patients with their return to higher levels of function and rehabilitation goals.
Beyond the world of physio, Mr Murray-Downing is a keen rugby and squash player and cyclist. Having competed for Essex County Squash and toured the UK circuit, he understands the demand of high-level sport and the frustration of injury.
