About Miss Lucy Barker
Miss Lucy Barker has been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon since 2013, specialising in paediatric ophthalmology, adult and paediatric cataract surgery, and strabismus. She holds esteemed positions at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, where she serves as both Clinical Director and Service Director for paediatric ophthalmology. Lucy's training was completed at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where she undertook a fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus from 2012 to 2013. Her expertise was further honed during her four-year tenure at the Rwandan International Institute for Ophthalmology in Kigali, Rwanda. Here, she specialised in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, gaining extensive experience. Upon returning to the UK, she completed her training in paediatric cataract surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital before assuming her current role. In her clinic, Lucy treats children with a variety of eye conditions. These include routine vision screening, assessments for poor vision, and testing for glasses to correct long-sight, short-sight, and astigmatism. She also addresses amblyopia (lazy eye) and prescribes patching treatments. Her expertise extends to managing cataracts in babies and children, treating squints (strabismus) and double vision with botox or surgery, and handling issues related to convergence and visual interpretation. Lucy is proficient in treating conditions affecting the front of the eye, allergic eye diseases, lid inflammation (blepharitis), eyelid cysts (styes/chalazion), conjunctivitis, and watery or sticky eyes. Beyond her clinical practice, Lucy is deeply involved in teaching and lecturing. She regularly contributes to a variety of courses, including the UCL MSc Ophthalmology course and the Moorfields Cornea and Cataract Symposium. She remains committed to training medical personnel in sub-Saharan Africa through associations with the World Sight Foundation and the West African College of Surgeons. Additionally, she has co-authored the OST curriculum-based textbook "Training in Ophthalmology," furthering her impact on the field.
