About

Dr John David Emery was born and educated locally in the area around Bolton. Developing a keen interest in the sciences he completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at Durham University, graduating with honours, and subsequently qualifying as a doctor from the Nottingham University Medical School. As a medical student he excelled and was awarded the student prize for his Community Follow Up Project. He also scored highly in the Duke Elder examination awarded for ophthalmology.

Dr Emery has undertaken a medical elective in Belize, central America, alongside a team of doctors from Harvard University based at the San Ignacio Hospital. During this he contributed to the specialities of ophthalmology and respiratory medicine, gaining a great deal of practical experience and knowledge whilst working tirelessly to improve the health of the local population.

Upon his graduation from medical school, he scored highly in the national matching process for junior doctors and received his first choice of position in the competitive Central Manchester foundation programme, based at Manchester Royal Infirmary. As he transitioned from outstanding medical student to junior doctor he gained a wealth of experience in such specialties as general medicine and surgery, general practice (GP), emergency medicine and psychiatry.

He went on to complete his GP training within the Salford and Trafford deanery. Here he gained further valuable experience as a junior doctor in such specialties as GP, paediatrics, emergency medicine, gynaecology and women’s health. It was during this time where he first became interested in elderly medicine, working closely with the geriatric team at Trafford General Hospital.

Since his qualification Dr Emery has further developed and nurtured his specialist interest in elderly health and longevity medicine. Throughout the COVID pandemic he worked as a care homes doctor for the Northern Care Alliance. During this challenging period he dedicated himself to the residents of Salford in order provide them with the best possible care. In 2022 he was awarded a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and the British Geriatric Society.

In his current NHS role, Dr Emery is a practising GP partner and holds a list at Peel House Medical Practice, which has served the population of Accrington for over 50 years. He strives for daily excellence in his medical care, providing a personalised service to his patients. His focus is also on training the next generation of doctors and he is actively involved in the teaching and supervision of both medical students and resident doctors at Peel House. He is invited regularly in a formal capacity to work as an examiner at Manchester Medical School.

Dr Emery continues to live locally with his wife and three children. In his spare time he enjoys running, hiking and generally being outdoors whenever possible. He looks forward to meeting you, fostering a lifelong, trust-based relationship with you and working together to improve and keep you in robust health. In his private practice he states that his aim is to help his patients “live better for longer”.
