Dr Jeremy Russell is an experienced, Australian trained neurosurgeon who manages all general neurosurgical conditions. 

Jeremy has subspecialty expertise in both cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery, having obtained fellowships in both areas at the Toronto Western Hospital, Canada over a period of two years under world renowned neurosurgeons Prof Michael Tymianski and Prof Fred Gentili respectively.

Having developed an extensive interest in treating trigeminal neuralgia, Jeremy now manages over 100 new trigeminal patients a year, offering a comprehensive review and treatment program across all facets of its management. He offers all forms of surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia and has sat on the Trigeminal Neuralgia Australia Association’s medical advisory panel since 2018.

Jeremy also heads the cerebrovascular service at the Austin Hospital, leading fortnightly meetings where all cerebrovascular cases (aneurysms, AVMs, dAVFs, and bypass for moyamoya disease) are discussed. He performs a high volume of cerebrovascular cases every year, and for cerebral aneurysm cases, utilises minimally invasive craniotomy techniques to enhance recovery times. He uses state of the art intra-operative technology to perform angiograms (vessel imaging), ensuring real-time evaluation of brain blood vessels, thus reducing the potential risk of stroke to patients. 

Complex brain tumours are another specialty interest of Jeremy’s, regularly helping people with tumours in especially difficult or dangerous locations such as vestibular (acoustic) or trigeminal schwannomas, meningiomas and gliomas. This is often undertaken in a large team environment due to their inherent complexity, alongside other neurosurgeons and skull base ENT surgeons.

A substantial component of Jeremy’s practice is managing spinal degenerative and tumour conditions, employing minimally invasive or key-hole techniques and computer navigation when indicated to enhance patient recovery. He particularly focuses on finding the root cause of the problem, avoiding large fusion operations in the vast majority of situations.

Jeremy’s guiding principle is to avoid surgical intervention where possible. When this is not achievable, he believes that taking a collaborative approach to patient care is imperative for their treatment. He works alongside a broad range of top specialists to ensure that his patients receive a customised and inclusive solution to their condition.
