Mr
Mr Huw Oliphant
Ophthalmology
About
He has undertaken thousands of eye operations over more than a decade in ophthalmology, as well as latterly completing 2 fellowships in oculoplastic surgery, which is his sub specialist interest. He regularly performs cataract surgery in his NHS role and in the private sector. He was appointed to Brighton as consultant in 2021 where he undertakes complex oculoplastic work, working alongside neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and ENT surgeons. He has worked in Eastbourne DGH over the last year as a cross-site appointment.
He operates regularly on patients with watery eyes and offers scarless endoscopic DCR, as well as traditional means of correcting watery eyes (external DCR, punctoplasty, eyelid tightening). He also undertakes orbital decompression surgery for patients with thyroid eye disease, which he has an interest in.
He has set up and runs a regional service for patients needing eye removal surgery (at Brighton General Hospital), or revisional surgery including fat grafting, which he runs alongside the regional orbital prosthetist. This clinic sees patients from all over the south East and London.
Additionally he is head of the ophthalmic emergency department at the Sussex Eye Hospital.
Privately he sees patients needing cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, or surgery to address watery eyes, or patients with orbital/artifical eye related problems. He is also happy seeing patients with general ophthalmic issues such as glaucoma and patients on a urgent basis. He has an interest in cosmetic eyelid surgery, and takes an interest in revision cases and cases where filler has been used and there are complications secondary to this.
He is known for being gentle, approachable and is always happy to listen to patients for as long as they need. He prides himself on treating patients as he would his family.
Alongside his clinical role Huw is lead for undergraduate training in ophthalmology, for Brighton and Sussex Medical School, where he is an honorary lecturer. He regularly supervises medical students undertaking research projects. He is also the Royal College of Ophthalmologists tutor for the Sussex Eye Hospital supervising trainee doctors in ophthalmology in this area.
Outside of work Huw lives in Eastbourne with his young family He enjoys long distance running and runs the Beachy Head Marathon most years. In his spare time he loves to be with his family or out on the South Downs running
