About

Mr Matar  is a specialist, high-volume, multi-fellowship trained full-time elective consultant hip & knee replacement surgeon based in Nottingham since 2020.

Mr Matar has completed his early surgical training in North Central Thames, London, and was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS Eng) in 2012. He then completed his higher speciality orthopaedic training in the North West including the Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital, renowned orthopaedic specialist centre and the birthplace of the modern hip replacement surgery. Mr Matar was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2017 and completed his higher speciality training and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2019.

Mr Matar undertook further fellowship specialist training in hip & knee replacements and revision surgery. Having been awarded The Charnley Latta Travelling Scholarship from the Sir John Charnley Trust, he undertook sub-specialist training at the prestigious Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada. There, he worked closely with internationally renowned experts in the field of joint replacement surgery, including Professor Hugh Cameron, among others, with whom he continues to collaborate on research projects. He has also trained under the distinguished Mr Peter James in Nottingham City Hospital, advancing his skills in revision knee surgery, where he continues to work as a consultant specialising in hip & knee replacements and revision knee surgery and is part of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network (EMSON).

Mr Matar’s clinical practice is focused on hip & knee replacements and revision (re-do) surgery for failing knee replacements. He performs over 500 joint replacements per year (https://surgeonprofile.njrcentre.org.uk/SurgeonProfile?gmccode=7019778).

Further, Mr Matar is an award-winning Researcher and an accomplished Author. He first undertook an undergraduate research degree in evidence-based medicine and worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in leading research centres in St Thomas’ and St Georges’ Hospitals in London. He was then awarded a Research Associate post working on National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)-funded Health Technology Assessment programmes, leading to national and international guidelines for musculoskeletal conditions. Mr Matar was later awarded his Masters Degree in Clinical Research (MSc Res) with Distinction from The University of Edinburgh.

Mr Matar’s research interests have recently been focussed on improving patients’ outcomes in hip & knee replacements and the promotion of evidence-based orthopaedic practice.

Mr Matar has published over 120 peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals and authored many book chapters in the field of hip & knee replacement and presented his work nationally and internationally. In 2021, he published a major collaborative book on revision knee surgery alongside his mentors commissioned by the esteemed Springer Publishing entitled “Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Practical Guide” which has sold over 10,000 copies, both in-print and electronically.

Relevant Landmark Publications:

I’m passionate about evidence-based practice and strive to provide my patients with the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatments and surgical techniques that I deploy in my practice.

Here are two examples of major projects that I have conducted and have made huge impact on refining my surgical techniques and practice in hip & knee replacement surgery:

• Matar HE, Platt SR, Gollish JD, Cameron HU. Overview of Randomized Controlled Trials in Total Knee Arthroplasty (47,675 Patients): What Have We Learnt? J Arthroplasty. 2020 Jun;35(6): 1729-1736.

Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) provide the most reliable evidence on the effectiveness of interventions. In this project, I studied all RCTs ever been published on the subject of total knee replacements which involved 403 trials in 47,675 patients. The results of this landmark paper are published in the prestigious American Journal of Arthroplasty. Due to its academic and practical significance, it was supported by a dedicated editorial by some of the most influential and leading knee replacement surgeons in North America.

• Matar HE, Platt SR, Board TN, Porter ML. Overview of Randomized Controlled Trials in Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (34,020 Patients): What Have We Learnt? J Am Acad Orthop Surg: Glob Res Rev. 2020 Aug;4(8):e20.00120.

Similarly, I studied all RCTs ever been published on total hip replacements which involved 312 trials in over 34,000 patients. The results of this landmark study were also published in the prestigious Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
