About Dr Shaun E Foo
Dr Shaun Foo is a dual-accredited Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He also serves as Co-Director of the Leeds Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Care Centre and holds an honorary academic appointment as Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds. Dr Foo graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester, where he first developed a passion for the neurosciences. He undertook specialist training in Neurology, during which he developed particular interests in electrodiagnostic medicine, peripheral nerve disorders, and neuromuscular diseases. On completion of his Neurology training, he pursued further specialist training in Clinical Neurophysiology in Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire region, achieving specialist accreditation in both specialities. This highly complementary dual qualification allows Dr Foo to seamlessly integrate his delivery of diagnostic and clinical care. In his substantive NHS consultant role, Dr Foo’s clinical practice spans a wide range of diagnostic and sub-specialist areas. He undertakes complex nerve conduction studies and electromyography (NCS/EMG), with a focus on diagnosing and managing peripheral nerve injuries, neuromuscular disorders, and motor neurone disease. He is also skilled in the use of ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for the treatment of spasticity, and pain syndromes. His work frequently involves close collaboration with specialist colleagues in neurology, hand surgery, orthopaedics, and spinal surgery amongst others, particularly in the assessment of complex peripheral nerve injuries, neuromuscular disorders such as myopathies, and MND. Dr Foo works closely with a highly dedicated multidisciplinary team which includes specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, holistic, patient-centred care. Alongside his clinical duties, Dr Foo is an active researcher. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at national and international scientific conferences. In his current role as Co-Director of the Leeds MND Care Centre, he is closely involved in establishing research and clinical trials at the Rob Burrow Centre for MND, with a particular focus on expanding patient access to trials and innovative treatments. Dr Foo is also committed to medical education. He has organised and led neurology teaching programmes for medical students at the University of Leeds and has supervised postgraduate trainees across both Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. As a GMC-recognised trainer, he plays an active role in developing the next generation of Neurologists and Clinical Neurophysiologists.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
