About

Dr Tom Richards, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, currently works within the University College London NHS Hospital (UCLH) NHS Trust and The Whittington NHS Hospital. He also sees patients in several other clinics privately. He is highly experienced in managing and treating gastrointestinal (GI) and breast cancers. In his daily work, he treats cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreaticobiliary, colorectal and breast. He can perform a wide range of procedures including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biological targeted drug. He has a special interest in specific radiotherapy techniques including cyberknife, intensity-modulated, 4D-CT planning, deep inspiratory breath-hold, and image-guided radiotherapy.

Dr Richards graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine, before starting his specialist training in general internal medicine at King's College Hospital in London. Following this, he went on to do oncology training in 2015 at St Bartholomew's and The Royal Marsden Hospitals. During his training, he undertook a research degree at The Institute of Cancer Research examining the mechanisms by which therapeutic radiation affects normal tissues and strategies to detect and reduce late toxicity after curative treatment, he was later awarded a PhD for his work. His PhD work was also recognised by the research community as he was awarded the Johnson and Johnson clinical research prize in 2012 for this work. After he completed his training, he was appointed as Clinical Oncology Consultant at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London NHS Hospitals.

Dr Richards has several professional memberships including The Royal College of Physicians, ESMO, and ESTRO. Additionally, he has been appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists. He actively engages with the scientific community, having chaired and spoken at conferences and meetings around the world. He is also an excellent teacher, holding the position of the course tutor and examiner for an MSc course at the Institute of Cancer research and is the local principal investigator for several GI cancer clinical trials.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
