About Dr Simon Smale
Dr Simon Smale is a consultant gastroenterologist practising at York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His special interests include IBS, functional gastroenterology, the microbiome, faecal transplantation, and C. Difficile related diarrhoea. In 2009, he was awarded the York Press Healthcare Hero Award for his provision of excellence in patient care. He underwent his medical training in Nottingham at Queens Medical Centre and Northampton. Following this time, he worked in London for Professor Dame Carol Black and the later Dr Ian Forgacs. His first consultant post was in York in 2005. In 2018, Dr Smale moved to Manchester to develop his particular specialist interests in functional gastroenterology. He has an interest in patient safety, having held a number of patient safety leadership positions in his local region, including acting as the lead for C. Difficile related diarrhoea. Dr Smale acted as one of the Specialist Advisors for the 2014/15 NICE Guidelines on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). He has a track record as an entrepreneur having acted as Medical Director of a digital health start-up company designed to provide behavioural change for patients living with chronic disease. It is Dr Smale's belief that while medical services often focus on the specific interventions that medical professionals have to offer, optimal patient care should involve a number of professionals working alongside the patient to ensure that the patient receives not only the best medical care but also the best from his or her life. Outside of the clinic, Dr Smale enjoys triathlons, duathlons, cycling and reading. Dr. Smale has expertise in the following areas: • Colonoscopy • Gastroscopy • Sigmoidoscopy • Allergy test • Blood tests • Gluten sensitivity tests • Polypectomy • Functional Gastroenterology • IBS • Altered Bowel Habit • Constipation • Diarrhoea • Heartburn • Indigestion • Nausea and vomiting • Malabsorption • Rectal bleeding • Pelvic pain • Abdominal Pain • Abdominal swelling
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
