Dr Clayton undertook her undergraduate training at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London and obtained a Clinical Sciences BSC(Hons) from Imperial College before graduating in 1999.

Rima entered into dermatology with her first post as a Senior House Office at Amersham Hospital. Following on from this, she pursued her dermatology higher specialist training in Oxford where she developed a particular interest in skin cancer management and dermatological surgery. Her further interest in paediatric dermatology came from time spent at the Birmingham Children's Hospital.
