Professor Richard Steeds is an NHS Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Birmingham and a nationally and internationally recognised expert in heart valve disease and cardiomyopathy. His clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of valvular heart disease and the management of cardiomyopathies, including rare and metabolic conditions.
Professor Steeds is the Clinical Lead for the Valve Surveillance Clinic, where he cares for patients with single and multiple valve diseases affecting both the left heart (aortic and mitral valves) and right heart (tricuspid and pulmonary valves). He has extensive experience in long-term surveillance of valve disease, carefully tracking changes in valve function and optimising the timing of referral for surgery or intervention to minimise risk and improve outcomes. His specialist interests range from common conditions such as aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation to rare and complex valve disorders, including tricuspid regurgitation related to tumours or drug effects.
His practice combines outpatient and inpatient care with advanced cardiovascular investigations, including echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, allowing comprehensive assessment of both straightforward and complex valve disease. He is also highly experienced in managing cardiomyopathy, from more common forms such as dilated cardiomyopathy to ultra-rare conditions including Fabry cardiomyopathy.
Professor Steeds is the Clinical Cardiology Lead for Cardiovascular Imaging, overseeing echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance services. He is the immediate past President of the British Society of Echocardiography and an Honorary Reader at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed research publications and is regularly invited to lecture nationally and internationally.
