Dr Clifford received his first class medical degree from the University of Oxford in 1984 before training at the prestigious St Mary's Medical School in London. He holds a Doctor of Medicine degree in ventricular hypertrophy genetics. He is also a member of a number of professional organisations, including the British Cardiac Society and the British Cardiac Intervention Society.

He is actively engaged in research, with an emphasis on molecular cardiology and coronary intervention. He has gained numerous awards for his work, including the National Bronze Merit Award and he was elected to the Council of British Cardiovascular Society, and was a finalist for the HSJ Value in Healthcare Award.
