Dr. Natalia Zarate-Lopez is a specialist in gastroenterology from Spain. After completing a CCT fellowship in Neurogastroenterology at Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, she obtained a post-CCT fellowship at MacMaster University's Intestinal Disease Research Programme where she studied the role of interstitial cells of Cajal in human motor disorders. She achieved her PhD in 2008 with a project integrating basic science and clinical research leading to a groundbreaking investigation into the pacemakers of the gut.
After moving to London, she obtained further training and expertise in lower GI physiology and pelvic floor disorders at The Royal London Hospital before being appointed as Consultant Neurogastroenterologist at UCLH (University College London Hospitals)in 2018 - one of the clinical leads of their GI Physiology Unit. She has extensive knowledge regarding all standard and advanced GI Physiology tests - including oesophageal & anorectal high resolution manometry; wireless pH/motility capsule; nuclear medicine gastric emptying; SIBO tests, alimetry & barostat among others. She is a GI Physiology/Neurogastro unit lead at UCLH. Additionally, her clinical activity focuses on upper & lower gastrointestinal functional + motility disorders (with specific interest in gastroparesis & pelvic floor disorders) as well as how rheumatological, neurological & Endocrine Disorders impact gut sensorimotor function. She runs the Bravo (wireless pH oesophageal testing) in the endoscopy service at UCLH. She is a honorary consultant at GOSH and leads the adolescent Neurogastro transition clinics at UCLH. She also takes an active interest in researching - particularly concerning techniques for managing patients with functional or motility gut disorders through the development + implementation of more novel methods. To date, she has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles relating to GI physiology + neurogastroenterology.
