Dr Cheung was awarded a three-year Haywood Foundation clinical research fellowship at the Staffordshire Rheumatology Centre. Their research investigated the role of specific proteins in joint inflammation and its connection to common arthritis. In 2000, Dr Cheung received a doctorate in medicine for their thesis. The thesis was based on original work looking at serum pro-metalloproteinase 3, a potential marker of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.
Dr Cheung is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and the British Society for Rheumatologists.
