About Dr Koon Chan
Dr. Koon Loong Chan is a highly respected consultant obstetrician and specialist in fetal and maternal medicine, practicing at The Portland Hospital in Manchester and London. He is an expert in antenatal care, high-risk pregnancies, fetal medicine, multiple pregnancies, obstetric ultrasounds, HIV in pregnancy, fetal abnormalities, amniocentesis, and preconceptual counselling. Dr. Chan completed his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in September 2002 in Sheffield and finalized his subspecialty training in Fetal and Maternal Medicine in December 2005 in Nottingham. A graduate of St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School (London), he earned a BSc (Hons) and MB BS in 1993. He achieved membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in May 1999 and was subsequently elected a Fellow (FRCOG) in September 2011. Renowned for his expertise in obstetric ultrasound, Dr. Chan is highly skilled in nuchal translucency and detailed fetal anatomy scanning. His proficiencies extend to preconceptual and prenatal counselling, diagnosing fetal abnormalities, performing invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and managing high-risk and multiple pregnancies. As an experienced obstetrician in one of the UK's busiest maternity units, he frequently handles complex deliveries, including caesarean sections. Patients from across the Northwest region, particularly those facing high-risk pregnancies, fetal complications, HIV in pregnancy, or multiple pregnancies, are regularly referred to Dr. Chan. At Saint Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, he serves as the obstetric lead for multiple pregnancy and HIV in pregnancy. Previously, he held key roles at the hospital as the obstetric lead for risk management, clinical effectiveness, and clinical audit. While maintaining a strong presence in the NHS, Dr. Chan also operates a thriving private practice. Dr. Chan offers a comprehensive range of services, from one-off consultations to tailored care packages that span from the 8th week of pregnancy through to 6 weeks postnatally. Collaborating closely with private midwife Emily Street, he provides holistic care designed to support women throughout their pregnancy journey, minimize stress, and ensure the best possible outcomes for mothers and their babies.
