About Dr Karen Breen
Dr Karen Breen is a Consultant Haematologist with a specialist interest in thrombosis. She completed her undergraduate training at Trinity College Dublin, followed by postgraduate and specialist haematology training in Ireland, before moving to the UK to undertake research leading to an MD. She is a member of both the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Pathologists (UK). Dr Breen is actively involved in clinical trials and translational research in antiphospholipid syndrome and has authored and co-authored numerous publications on thromboembolic disease. She regularly lectures at national and international conferences and plays a leading role in the acute management of thrombosis and anticoagulation as part of the Trust Thromboprophylaxis and Thrombosis Committee at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Her main clinical interests are in the management of thrombotic and bleeding disorders, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and anticoagulation management with both traditional and newer direct oral anticoagulants. She also has extensive expertise in peri-operative management of clotting and bleeding disorders, including during pregnancy, as well as in the investigation and treatment of abnormal blood counts such as anaemia and thrombocytopenia.
