Dr Joel Mawdsley is a Consultant Gastroenterologist based in the internationally respected Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at Guys and St Thomas' where he is joint clinical lead. He studied pre-clinical medicine at Queens College Cambridge where he received a first-class honours degree in medical studies and won the Max Bull Prize for medicine. Dr Mawdsley was also an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College and a Consultant at West Middlesex University Hospital where he was training lead for endoscopy.
Dr Mawdsley specialises in luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy and IBD. He was a clinical research fellow at the Royal London from 2005-2007 where he completed a Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, publishing several high impact papers. He has maintained an active research interest being involved in clinical research studies in IBD and with a particular interest in the brain-gut axis.
Dr Mawdsley was a colonoscopist in the National Bowel Cancer Screening program for 3 years in the mid-2010s.
