Professor James Lindsay is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Professor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease with over 30 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive health conditions. He is currently based at the London Digestive Centre and The Princess Grace Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, and holds a full-time academic and clinical position at Barts Health NHS Trust. Professor Lindsay specialises in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, and a wide range of upper and lower gastrointestinal conditions. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, bowel cancer screening, colonic polyp removal, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and PEG placement. He is accredited by the National Screening Centre for bowel cancer screening colonoscopy.
He studied medical sciences at the University of Cambridge and went on to qualify in medicine from the University of Oxford. He completed his PhD in mucosal immunology at Imperial College London and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2008. Professor Lindsay has played an influential role in developing the management guidelines for IBD. He has an international clinical research profile, serving as Chief Investigator on multiple clinical trials of both medical and nutritional therapies for IBD. He also leads a programme of translational science research.
He has held numerous positions on national and international IBD societies including Education Officer and Governing Board Member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation. He is currently scientific officer for the International Organisation for the study of IBD (IOIBD).
In addition to his clinical work, Professor Lindsay is Module Director for the MSc in Gastroenterology at Queen Mary University of London. He has published extensively in international medical journals and is frequently invited to present at conferences worldwide.
His approach to care is both research-informed and patient-focused, aiming to improve outcomes through a combination of clinical excellence, advanced diagnostics, and collaborative decision-making.
