About Dr Ian McCafferty
Dr Ian McCafferty is a highly respected Consultant Diagnostic & Interventional Radiologist in Birmingham, renowned for his expertise in renal, prostate colorectal and vascualr malformations imaging and interventional radiology. With a distinguished career spanning over two decades, Dr McCafferty has played a pivotal role in advancing prostate and renal cancer diagnostics, minimally invasive therapies in the treatment of renal cancer with ablation, embolization for benign prostatic hyperplasia, varicoceles, pelvic congestion, vascular malformations and genicular artery embolisation within the West Midlands and beyond. After qualifying in medicine from University College London, Dr McCafferty obtained his membership of the Royal College of Physicians and took up a training post in clinical Radiology in the West Midlands training scheme. He undertook specialist training in interventional radiology and a fellowship at Oxford University Hospitals, developing a particular interest in urological imaging. He was appointed at University Hospital Birmingham in 1999 where he has been instrumental in the introduction and development of multi-parametric MRI for the early detection and accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer, working in close collaboration with urologists and oncologists to ensure the highest standards of patient care. In 2022 Dr McCafferty was headhunter to the Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital to head up their expanding interventional radiology services. Dr McCafferty is recognised for his commitment to innovation, being one of the pioneers in urological minimally invasive procedures. His clinical practice focuses on providing precise, patient-centred diagnostic and treatment pathways, reducing the need for invasive surgery and improving patient outcomes. In addition to his clinical work, Dr McCafferty is actively involved in teaching and research. He regularly lectures at national and international conferences, has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Royal College of Radiologists and British Society of Interventional Radiologists where he was president from 2019-2021. Dr McCafferty was a founding member of both the British Society of Urogenital Radiology, Interventional Oncology UK and Vascular Anomalies Special Interest Group within BSIR. Dr McCafferty’s approach is defined by his dedication to evidence-based medicine, patient safety, and the continual improvement of prostate cancer diagnosis and management. Outside work, Ian enjoys mountain biking, golf, dining with friends and travelling.
