About Dr David Thomson
• Head and neck cancer oncologist, treating patients with high precision radiotherapy, proton beam therapy and drug therapies • MAHSC honorary Professor at the University of Manchester • Honorary Clinical Professor of Oncology at the University of Liverpool • Clinical Lead for Head at Neck Cancer at the NHS Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance • Clinical Lead for Research at the NHS Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance Professor Thomson has a substantial national and international reputation in his field of head and neck oncology. He qualified form Oxford University Medical School in 2004, with a First class honours degree. He also has a Doctorate of Medicine research degree from the University of Manchester. He is an honorary MAHSC Chair and Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Manchester and Honorary Clinical Professor of Oncology at the University of Liverpool. He is the clinical lead for head and neck cancer in Greater Manchester (2018-), and for the head and neck team at The Christie. Professor Thomson has co-authored national and international guidelines for the treatment of head and neck cancer. He was an invited expert reviewer for the American and European Radiation Societies (ASTRO and ESTRO) guidelines for the treatment of head and neck cancers. He led for ESTRO on the expert international consensus guidance for the management of head and neck cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a member of the NHS England national proton commissioning panels for head and neck cancer and exceptional indications (2019-). He is also the NHS Greater Manchester Cancer Clinical Lead for Research (2022-), and is Chief Investigator for major late phase multi-centre head and neck cancer clinical trials. He has given numerous invited talks on the treatment of head and neck cancer, has published work in high impact journals including Lancet Oncology and Journal of Clinical Oncology, and served as associate editor for the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (2020-2024).
