Dr Asish Bassi is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist with specialist expertise in luminal gastroenterology and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He trained in leading gastroenterology centres across Wales, London and Liverpool, and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Liverpool in recognition of his academic and clinical research achievements.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2005 at Whiston Hospital within St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Dr Bassi has played a central role in developing and leading regional gastroenterology and endoscopy services. He is a core member of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team and provides gastroenterology leadership for lower gastrointestinal services, with a strong focus on bowel cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Bassi manages a broad spectrum of digestive disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux disease, coeliac disease, abdominal pain, anaemia, diarrhoea, constipation and weight loss. He performs nearly 1,000 endoscopic procedures annually and is an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. His expertise includes advanced therapeutic procedures such as Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), complex polyp removal, stent placement, stricture dilatation and PEG insertion.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Bassi serves as Clinical Lead for the Cheshire and Merseyside Endoscopy Network and advises NHS England on endoscopy transformation programmes across the North West. He is also an accredited endoscopy trainer, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, and Regional Adviser for Merseyside for the Royal College of Physicians. Actively involved in research, he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents at national and international conferences, with particular interests in pharmaco-economics, endoscopy innovation and quality improvement in gastrointestinal care.
