Prof. Dr. Anthony Li
Cardiology
About
He is also highly experienced in atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation and was one of the first consultants to use pulsed field ablation, a newer and highly selective energy technology that can improve procedural success rates while reducing the risk of damage to surrounding heart structures and lowering complication rates for patients.
Dr Li graduated from St. George’s University of London in 2004, achieving multiple distinctions and academic awards. He completed his general cardiology training within the South West London rotation, during which he undertook three years of postgraduate research focused on the management of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
He then completed over five years of specialist electrophysiology training in London at St George’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital, developing advanced expertise in catheter ablation and device therapy. To further refine his skills, Dr Li also trained at the internationally renowned Cardiac Arrhythmia Centre at UCLA in Los Angeles, where he learned advanced ablation techniques not widely available in the UK at the time.
Dr Li has performed over 1,000 catheter ablation procedures and implanted more than 1,000 cardiac devices, including pacemakers and defibrillators. His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of heart rhythm management, from medication strategies through to complex ablation procedures and device implantation.
He maintains an NHS consultant post at St George’s Hospital, a major cardiac referral centre for South London and Surrey, and also sees private patients in clinics including Queen Mary’s Hospital.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Li is actively involved in research and regularly presents at international cardiology and electrophysiology conferences. He contributes to the field as a scholar in residence for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Clinical Electrophysiology (JACC EP), supporting academic publishing in the specialty.
He is also a committed patient advocate, contributing regularly to the British Heart Foundation’s “Heart Matters” magazine in its “Ask the Expert” section, and assisting with the review of patient education materials including leaflets, animations, and visual resources.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
