Andrew is a consultant dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon in Canterbury, where he leads the skin cancer MDT and is actively involved in the teaching and training of medical students and dermatology trainees.

In 2010 he spent a year in Durban, South Africa where he helped set up a skin cancer centre, offering free treatment for those who could not afford care, from which he trained the local dermatologists in both basic and advanced skin cancer surgery. Dr Birnie continues to teach and train all grades of doctors, nurses and students nationally and internationally.
He has also created Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen with the aim of reducing the incidence of skin cancer through the increased use of high quality sunscreen. It is a dermatologist specification sunscreen, sold at the lowest possible price on Amazon, where it has over 1000 reviews, in addition to excellent feedback from dermatologists and dermatology nurses.
