About

Dr Dhara Karunaratne is a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with additional specialist training in women’s ultrasound. She practises at Prince of Wales Private Hospital, providing comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological care with a strong emphasis on compassionate, patient-centred medicine.

Originally born in Sri Lanka and raised primarily in Singapore, Dr Karunaratne also spent periods living in San Francisco and Melbourne before settling in Sydney. She initially began university studies in law at Monash University before transitioning into medicine at the University of New South Wales.

She completed most of her specialist obstetrics and gynaecology training at The Royal Hospital for Women, with additional experience gained at Westmead Hospital. During her specialist training, she also spent two years living, travelling, and volunteering in India and Nepal, an experience that helped shape her holistic and compassionate approach to patient care.

Dr Karunaratne manages both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, including IVF pregnancies and multiple pregnancies, and provides ongoing care from early pregnancy through to delivery. Her gynaecological practice includes fertility investigations, management of recurrent miscarriage, menstrual disorders, painful or heavy periods, and broader women’s health concerns.

With further expertise in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound, she incorporates detailed imaging into assessment and ongoing care, supporting accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment planning.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
