Professor Charlotte Lawthom is a Consultant Neurologist. Educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, her passion for neurology was ignited during her neurology teaching at the Clinical School. Following a medical rotation in Cambridge Deanery, she gained invaluable experience at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Medicine before furthering her training in Adelaide, where she completed an Advanced Neurology Fellowship and developed a specialist interest in epilepsy.
Returning to Wales, Professor Lawthom completed her Neurology training and earned her PhD in Epilepsy and Vision from Cardiff University. Since becoming a consultant in 2008, she has been dedicated to providing acute neurology care, a field that she believes is still underserved across the UK. She currently serves as the Wales National Lead for headache, aiming to improve headache care delivery.
Recognised for her commitment to teaching, Professor Lawthom was honoured with the Cardiff Deanery teacher of the year award in 2015. In 2012, she pioneered the establishment of the first Open Access epilepsy service in the UK at Aneurin Bevan, where she continues to publish regularly in the field of epilepsy. Currently, she is engaged in researching a major project titled "Humanising Healthcare." Additionally, Professor Lawthom holds an honorary chair from Swansea University.
She is affiliated with several professional organisations, including the Royal College of Physicians, Association of British Neurology, International League Against Epilepsy, Medical Protection Society, and BMA. Her research interests span epilepsy, learning disabilities, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, and anti-seizure medications.
