Miss Anna Gruener
Ophthalmology
About
In addition, Miss Gruener is currently one of only three dedicated cataract trainers at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, and as such takes great pride in training up the next generation of cataract surgeons. She performs micro-incision sutureless cataract surgery with one of the lowest complication rates in the country and is the point of referral for the management of complex and more challenging cataract surgery. In the private sector she also offers premium intraocular lenses (IOL) to reduce dependence on glasses.
Her specialist training took place at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Medical Eye Unit at St Thomas', the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as Imperial College London. As a T.F.C. Frost Fellow Miss Gruener also completed further clinical training in Neuro-Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, under the direct tutelage of Dr Neil Miller, the Frank B Walsh Professor of Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. In acknowledgement of her research – published in The Lancet, JAMA Ophthalmology and Neurology - she was subsequently awarded the title of Adjunct Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
She undertook her medical degree at the University of Nottingham Medical School where she won an AstraZeneca Prize in Medical Sciences and the National Westminster Bank Prize in Health Care of the Elderly. In 2015 Miss Gruener was awarded the Ivor Levy Prize by the British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club. That same year she became the United Kingdom Alcon Glaucoma Case Study Competition Winner. In 2017 she was appointed as a substantive consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where she has since established a modern and state-of-the art Neuro-Ophthalmology Service with close ties to Neurology. As a member of the Skull Base Multidisciplinary Team, she co-manages patients with her colleagues in Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Oncology and Endocrinology. In 2019 Miss Gruener's clinical research was acknowledged with a prize by the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
In 2024 Miss Gruener received the Individual Clinical Ambulatory Care Award at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for going above and beyond, for innovating and making a real difference to how the Division provides care for patients and staff.
Her world-class training combined with her dedication to excellence means that you can expect the most advanced clinical and surgical expertise available.
