About Dr Andria Merrison
Dr. Andria Merrison is a Consultant Neurologist who has been an NHS Consultant since 2009. Over the course of her career, she has established and led two regional specialist services: the South West Neuromuscular Network and the Bristol Motor Neurone Disease Centre. As Director of both, she oversees care for individuals living with Neuromuscular conditions and Motor Neurone Disease across the South West of England. Dr. Merrison holds an honorary lectureship at the University of Bristol, where she is actively involved in the teaching and mentorship of medical students and doctors in training. She also serves as an NHS consultant appraiser and a Medical Examiner for both the University of Bristol and the Royal College of Physicians. Her academic credentials include a Doctorate in Medicine, awarded for her research into the muscle-regenerating properties of bone marrow stem cells. She has authored publications in peer-reviewed international journals covering a range of neurological topics including Neuromuscular disorders, Motor Neurone Disease, Eye movement abnormalities, Trigeminal neuralgia, and Cerebrovascular disease. The South West Neuromuscular Network, under her leadership, has been awarded both UK network and Centre of Excellence awards, currently supporting more than 6,000 patients in the region. In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Merrison contributes to regional and national NHS service development. She has an advisory role for NHS England Specialised Commissioning and the Royal College of Physicians and serves on the South West Clinical Senate. Dr. Merrison completed her pre-clinical training at Cambridge University, graduating with a Master of Arts (with Honours) in 1993. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Bristol in 1996.
