About Prof Ranjit Akolekar

Professor Ranjit Akolekar is a highly respected Consultant in Fetal–Maternal Medicine and Obstetrics, serving as the Clinical Lead of the Medway Fetal and Obstetric Medicine Centre (MFMC) at Medway NHS Foundation Trust. 

Professor Akolekar is an accredited sub-specialist in Fetal Medicine, combining expert clinical practice with a strong academic and research portfolio. He is a clinical academic affiliated with the Institute of Medical Sciences at Canterbury Christ Church University and plays a key role in postgraduate medical education. He was instrumental in establishing a higher academic PhD programme for postgraduate medical trainees and continues to work closely with the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing to advance education and research in high-risk obstetrics and fetal medicine.

He is the Lead for Obstetric Ultrasound Training at the School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the KSS Deanery, where he regularly organises ultrasound training courses and delivers interactive regional study days for higher specialist trainees. In addition, Professor Akolekar is the Clinical Lead for Research and Innovation at Medway NHS Foundation Trust and has previously served as Lead for Reproductive Health and Childbirth at the Clinical Research Network of the National Institute for Health Research for Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Professor Akolekar leads and collaborates on a wide range of regional, national, and international research studies in reproductive health. He works with a dedicated multidisciplinary research team of fellows and midwives at MFMC and is actively involved in major studies supported by the Fetal Medicine Foundation and the Fetal Medicine Research Institute, helping to translate high-quality research into everyday clinical practice.

Widely published in leading peer-reviewed international journals, Professor Akolekar’s primary research interests focus on the prediction and prevention of pregnancy complications, including fetal growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, vasa praevia, and strategies aimed at the prevention of stillbirths. His work has had a significant impact on improving outcomes for mothers and babies through evidence-based, preventative obstetric care.
