He completed his medical education with distinction from the University of Cambridge and London Hospital Medical College in 1995. His interest in research emerged during his postgraduate training, particularly in the realm of inflammatory bowel disease. Subsequently, he pursued further research in IBD at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Notably, his contributions in pioneering research on the low FODMAP diet during this period revolutionized the management of irritable bowel syndrome upon his return to the UK.
Professor Irving's dedication to the advancement of gastroenterology is evident through his active engagement in various professional committees. His previous involvement includes serving on the committee for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology, as well as chairing the Education Committee of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation and sitting on the Education Committee of the United European Gastroenterology Foundation.
