Professor Andrew Toms studied Medicine at Birmingham University, where they were awarded the Sir John Lewis prize for medicine. They began their Orthopaedic and Trauma training at Birmingham, before undertaking a fellowship at the internationally renowned North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre. Professor Toms undertook further specialist training in knee surgery at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol.
Professor Toms was awarded a Master of Science degree from Bristol University and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
