About Mr Philip Dobson
Mr Philip Dobson is a fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Newcastle upon Tyne, with specialist expertise in hip and knee conditions, robotic-assisted joint replacement, knee reconstruction and sports-related injuries. He graduated from Newcastle Medical School and completed his higher surgical training in orthopaedics in the North East of England. Following this, he undertook two years of international fellowship training in Australia, specialising in knee, hip and sports injury surgery at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, and major trauma surgery at John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales. Alongside his clinical training, Mr Dobson completed a PhD at Newcastle University, investigating the effects of ageing and mitochondrial dysfunction on bone biology — research that has been published and recognised with awards for its contribution to musculoskeletal science. He was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he treats both trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions, and serves as orthopaedic lead for surgical skills training. Mr Dobson’s clinical practice encompasses the following: • Total and partial knee replacement • Hip replacement • Robotic assisted joint replacement • ACL reconstruction • Meniscal and cartilage repair • Patella stabilisation • Osteotomy • Revision surgery • Joint injections He combines advanced surgical expertise with a patient-centred, evidence-based approach, tailoring treatment plans to each individual’s goals — whether that’s returning to sport, relieving chronic pain, or improving everyday mobility. Mr Dobson sees private patients at Nuffield Health Newcastle, and his NHS practice is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital, Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
