Mr Tom Walton is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Spire Nottingham Hospital, The Park Hospital Nottingham, and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as an Honorary Assistant Professor at The University of Nottingham.
He is a specialist in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, including robotic prostatectomy using the da Vinci Surgical System, and hydrogel spacer placement for prostate radiotherapy. Other key clinical interests include kidney cancer diagnosis and treatment, minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery, benign prostate enlargement, and Men’s Health assessment, including erectile dysfunction and testosterone deficiency.
Tom graduated with First-Class Honours from Nottingham University Medical School in 1998. He has completed comprehensive urology training, a research doctorate focused on the molecular basis of prostate cancer, and two years of specialised fellowship training in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, including a twelve-month placement at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. During the final phase of his training, Tom was awarded the Keith Yeates Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons in recognition of his exceptional performance in the FRCS(Urol) examinations.
At Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Tom serves as the Lead Cancer Clinician for Urology and Director of the Nottingham Fellowship in Robotic and Laparoscopic Urology. He has played a pivotal role in pioneering advanced surgical techniques in the region, performing the East Midlands’ first robotic prostatectomy in 2014, and has since introduced robotic partial nephrectomy, robotic pyeloplasty, retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery and local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsy to the Trust. To date he has performed over 1000 robotic prostatectomy and 250 robotic kidney surgery cases.
Tom is dedicated to improving patient outcomes through research and education. For over a decade, he has provided online access to his comprehensive urology notes for urologists and nurses. He has served on the British Association of Urological Surgeons Executive Committee in Urological Oncology and GIRFT National Kidney Cancer Guidelines Panel, and is an active reviewer for several leading journals, including the BJUI, Journal of Urology, and European Urology. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts in urology, and is a Principal Investigator for the NeuroSAFE PROOF, ELIPSE and PARTIAL trials in Nottingham.
Outside of work, Tom is a keen cyclist and walker. He is married with two children.
