Mr Rehman was appointed as full-time NHS Consultant Eye Surgeon back in 2002 and performs around a thousand surgical procedures a year. He has performed well over twenty thousand surgical procedures during his career. In 2016 Mr Rehman left his NHS Consultant post to focus his time on working with Optegra to refine vision correction services on a full-time basis. Between October 2017 to March 2020 Mr Rehman was UK clinical lead for the Cataract and Vision correction services. He is chair of the medical advisory committee at Optegra Eye Hospitals northern regional network and is an amabasaddor consultant to Optegra UK.
Never one to rest on former achievements, he continues to devote much time and energy towards further innovation with particular emphasis on helping to encourage the adoption of new ideas wherever they have been clearly proven to help improve the lives of his patients. He works tirelessly to identify innovative new developments in macular degeneration, cataract surgery and vision correction technology, bringing major advancements in eye care from around the world.
Outside his working life, Shafiq spends as much time as possible with his wife, four children and one rather lazy labradoodle and a 'lively' Bichon Frise.
He has interests in cosmology, evolutionary science and in the history of medical and scientific endeavours.
Shafiq also remains an avid traveller and hopes one day to circumnavigate the world but probably not until he has hung up his operating gloves!
