About

Mr Michael Moss is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Chichester with over 40 years of experience in hip and knee surgery. He practises privately at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital and also provides NHS care at St Richard’s Hospital. Since his appointment in 1994 as Consultant at St Richard’s and the University of Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, he has developed a specialist practice in primary and revision joint replacement surgery, robotic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, and image-guided injection therapies.

Mr Moss began his medical training at St George’s Hospital and completed an additional degree in Physiology at the University of London before qualifying as a doctor. He continued his surgical training at St George’s, Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals in London, gaining experience in a range of surgical disciplines including plastic and reconstructive surgery. After becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1988, he undertook specialist orthopaedic training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and St George’s Hospital. During this time, he worked under the guidance of the Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Queen and completed a fellowship with the founder of the London Hip Unit, Sarah Muirhead-Allwood.

Mr Moss expanded his expertise through further international fellowships at leading orthopaedic centres in the United States and Europe. He trained under Dr John Insall the 'father of the knee replacement' at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and under Dr Bill Harris at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. These experiences shaped his interest in innovative joint procedures and advanced implant techniques. He has maintained his association with these centres of excellence.

Mr Moss has played a pioneering role in the introduction of new surgical techniques and technologies to the UK. Working closely with major orthopaedic manufacturers such as Zimmer-Biomet and Corin, he was the first surgeon in the UK to implant several groundbreaking devices, including ceramic hip replacements, female-specific and high-flexion knee implants, and a patellofemoral replacement. He also introduced to the UK what is now the most widely used uncemented hip replacement in Europe and has collaborated in designing new hip systems. He is particularly known for his work on bicompartmental knee replacements and minimally invasive approaches, establishing St Richard’s Hospital as a recognised centre of excellence for revision joint surgery.

He is actively involved in clinical research and development, publishing in respected journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the British Journal of Surgery. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and leads training workshops for orthopaedic surgeons across Europe and the UK. His commitment to education has contributed to advances in patient recovery, reduced postoperative discomfort, and improved surgical outcomes.

In addition to his medical work, Mr Moss is an accomplished sailor and served as Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the British Olympic Sailing Team for 17 years. He is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, has won several national championships and holds London University Sailing Colours.

Mr Moss is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal Society of Medicine, the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Hip Society, the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the British Medical Association, the Medical Defence Union, and the General Medical Council.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
