About
After general medical and surgical training, he undertook Higher Surgical Training on the North West of England Rotation. Specialising in spinal surgery, he completed dedicated specialist spinal surgical training at Manchester Children's Hospital; Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester; The Robert Jones Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry and Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool.
As a full-time surgeon he works exclusively in the field of Spinal Disorders and their treatments. His NHS practice is based at the world renowned Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital. His private practice
base is the Priory Hospital Birmingham and he also treats private patients at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Woodlands Suite.
Mr Newton Ede consults and treats all areas of spinal disorders including: surgery for spinal deformity (including scoliosis); cervical (neck) surgery; low back (lumbar) surgery; spinal tumours; spinal pain and treatments for spinal pain including therapeutic injections. He is an expert in minimally invasive techniques including XLIF fusion and iFuse sacroiliac joint stabilisation.
He teaches trainee surgeons in the theoretical and practice of spinal surgery on a daily basis and is educational lead for trainee orthopaedic surgeons and a trainee GP's. In addition to this he is a Spinal Surgery Tutor for Undergraduates at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He is a key developer of the spinal surgery curriculum for the British Orthopaedic Association, which sets the standards for all Orthopaedic surgeons in training.
Mr Newton Ede's shares his passion by delivering lectures nationally and internationally to doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and the medical industry. He collaborates with University of Birmingham, University of Manchester and
University of Oxford for research into spinal diseases, intervertebral disc regeneration and inflammatory disease. He has published widely in areas of orthopaedics and spinal surgery. In 2016 he was awarded the Whitecloud Award by
SRS-IMAST for basic science research.
He is a member of The British Association of Spinal Surgeons and the Scoliosis Research Society. He currently holds an executive position on the British Scoliosis Society where he is developing the Society's online profile for the benefit or surgeons and patients.
With 17 years of service in the Army Reserve, including operational deployment, Mr Newton Ede remains committed to the care of servicemen and their families.
His professional goal for the next 3 years is to develop high quality digital content (podcasts and video series) to inform patients about spinal conditions and their treatments as well as educate and inform surgeons in training.
He lives in Birmingham with his family and enjoys cycling, running and winter sports.
