Mr Keshav Swarnkar is a highly experienced Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in colorectal and bowel surgery. He has practised as a substantive consultant in Newport, South East Wales, since 2003 and provides private care exclusively at St Joseph’s Hospital, where he has worked continuously since 2004.
Mr Swarnkar completed his undergraduate medical degree at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India, in 1991. All of his postgraduate surgical training was undertaken in England and Wales, including extensive experience within the Pan-Wales surgical rotation. He was awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1996 and went on to complete advanced training in general and colorectal surgery. In 2003, he was appointed as one of the youngest GMC-recognised substantive consultants in his specialty, receiving his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
Alongside his NHS role, Mr Swarnkar offers comprehensive private care for adults with general surgical and bowel-related conditions, including endoscopic investigations, benign colorectal disease, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. He is known for his clear communication style and for delivering highly personalised care tailored to each patient’s individual needs.
He has a longstanding interest in surgical innovation and, following training in world-leading centres in England and Germany, he introduced laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery pathways for bowel cancer patients within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He also pioneered the introduction of HALO (Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation Operation) and RAR (Recto-Anal Repair) procedures locally, significantly improving recovery outcomes for patients with haemorrhoids. His clinical practice includes keyhole and open surgery for bowel cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, haemorrhoids, fistulae and fissures, delivered within a multidisciplinary framework.
Mr Swarnkar leads the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and is committed to delivering long-term cancer care in collaboration with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and specialist nurses. He also has a strong interest in patient safety and infection control and serves as the clinical lead for infection control within the Health Board.
Education and training are central to his professional life. He is an Honorary Clinical Teacher in Surgery at Cardiff University and a recognised trainer for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate surgical trainees. He is also a Basic Surgical Skills and Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery trainer affiliated with the Welsh Institute of Minimal Access Therapy (WIMAT) and the Royal College of Surgeons. He is regularly invited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to lead advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery courses for senior surgeons. He is an examiner for postgraduate examinations for The Royal College of Surgeons and Regional surgical Ambassador to South Wales for Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
Mr Swarnkar is actively involved in research and strongly believes in translational research as a driver of clinical progress. As a Site Principal Investigator for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, he has successfully led national clinical trials and has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals on topics including bowel cancer, endoscopy, appendicitis, hernias and hospital-acquired infections. His research has been presented at national and international conferences, including presentations at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. He is also invited as a guest lecturer to UK primary care meetings and international surgical and oncology conferences.
