About Mr James Smith
Mr. Smith is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in lower limb surgery, with particular expertise in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. With over 10 years of consultant experience, he performs more than 350 joint replacements annually, including complex procedures. Born and raised in East Kent, Mr. Smith graduated from St George's Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 2000. His postgraduate training in specialist Orthopaedics was on the South East Thames rotation, where he gained extensive experience across various Orthopaedic specialties. Mr. Smith successfully completed the MRCS part 1 and 2 in London, followed by the Final FRCS Tr and Orth, also in London, on the first attempt. Further enhancing his skills, he completed fellowships in Calgary, Canada, and at Guy’s Hospital in the UK, focusing on hip and knee surgery. Additionally, he obtained a Diploma in Orthopaedics from the University of Brighton during his training. In 2012, Mr. Smith was appointed Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, where he established a lower limb reconstruction service. He introduced enhanced recovery to the trust, resulting in a high volume of procedures with minimal complications. While maintaining a focus on complex surgeries, he transitioned his practice entirely to the independent sector after relinquishing his NHS role. He offers his services to patients from all providers, including NHS patients, using the e-referral service. In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Smith provides a specialist Orthopaedic Medicolegal reporting service and remains dedicated to training junior trainees and operating staff. He teaches annually on an Arthroscopy course in association with Canterbury Christchurch University. Mr. Smith collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to achieve excellent outcomes for his patients, utilising modern techniques such as minimally invasive surgery and enhanced recovery. He performs hip and knee replacements using well-established prostheses, with a focus on long-term results. Working at the Chaucer Hospital, he ensures his patients have access to experienced theatre teams, nurses, and physiotherapists, enhancing the effectiveness of his procedures.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
