Mr Ian Botterill is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon working in Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Spire Hospital, Leeds. Leeds is the busiest UK hospital for emergency abdominal surgery and one of the busiest of the UK's for bowel cancer surgery and inflammatory bowel disease.
He is experienced in all aspects of colorectal conditions and has an extensive background in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, colonoscopy and the management and treatment of anorectal conditions (eg haemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas) as well as hernias.
He has a tertiary referral practice (ie receiving referrals from other hospitals) in the management of and surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, radiation enteritis, intestinal failure as well as surgery for pilonidal sinus disease, complex abominal wall hernias, and resection of synchronous colorectal cancer and liver metastases. In support of these areas of specialism he is a member of the following multi-disciplinary teams: colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure.
Mr Botterill qualified from Cambridge University and Manchester University, and then undertook his medical training in Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Leeds. He has also completed training in Copenhagen which specialises in enhanced recovery for patients after having large bowel surgery ('ERAS').
He has performed diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy for 25 years and his most recent data indicates a 96% completion rate with zero complications. As well as working in colorectal surgery, he has provided training in abdominal wall reconstruction for three UK companies who are involved in the manufacture of synthetic and biological meshes which are required for hernia repair.
He serves as Clinical Director at Alliance Health Group, the largest UK group of peer-selected consultants numbering around 1800 professionals. In this role, he advises on healthcare matters in relation to corporate healthcare provision, service delivery alongside Vitality Health, NHS outsourcing, and clinical governance matters.
He does selected medicolegal work and has provided expert witness and witness of fact evidence in a variety of forums (crown court, GMC, coroner's court, NHS resolution, internal trust inquiries and as well as confidential reports for a major healthcare insurer).
