Mr Ash Khurana completed his higher specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Welsh Rotation and was awarded FRCS in 2012. He also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University, which underpins his clinical work through a detailed understanding of biomechanical and mechanical principles relevant to spinal conditions.
He undertook spinal surgical training in Cardiff before completing an accredited fellowship at the Spinal Unit at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. During this fellowship, he gained extensive experience across all aspects of spinal surgery, with particular exposure to adult spinal deformity, metastatic spinal disease, and microscopic and minimally invasive spinal procedures. His training also included working closely with spinal neurosurgeons, providing a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical perspective on spinal pathology. In addition, he was awarded a travelling fellowship to the Spinal Unit at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong and is a member of several international spinal societies.
Mr Khurana’s NHS practice is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital. His clinical interests include spinal trauma, metastatic spinal tumours, and complex degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine. His practice includes the use of spinal injections, radiofrequency ablation, and both open and minimally invasive fixation techniques, including cement augmentation where appropriate. Outcomes of treatment are assessed using patient-reported outcome measures.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Khurana is actively involved in research and medical education. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and delivered presentations at national and international meetings. He acts as a reviewer for scientific journals, serves as an editor for orthopaedic in-training examinations, and is Chair for Professional Practice as well as an executive member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.
