Mr Andrew Porteous is a highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises exclusively in knee surgery. He is the Senior Knee Surgeon for North Bristol NHS Trust, which includes Southmead Hospital and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre.- one of the largest Specialist Orthopaedic Centres in the UK. His Private practice is based at the Spire Bristol Hospital.
Mr Porteous is known nationally and internationally as an expert in partial knee replacement, total knee replacement and complex revision knee replacement surgery. He has twice been voted one of the top Knee Surgeons in the country in a nation-wide Daily Mail survey asking knee surgeons who they would pick to treat their own family members.
Mr Porteous set up the Knee Injury Service for North Bristol and continues to look after student & recreational athletes and military personnel with ligament and cartilage injuries.
He is a Past-President of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and is on the Executive Committee of the National Joint Registry, which monitors outcome of all the joint replacements in Britain.
Mr Porteous graduated in Medicine from the University of Cape Town in 1990 before moving to the UK to undertake surgical and orthopaedic training in Bristol. He completed subspecialty training in knee surgery with a prestigious fellowship under Mr John Bartlett in Melbourne, Australia. After being awarded the BASK Travelling Fellowship, he continued advanced training with leading international experts including Peter Fowler in London (Ontario), Chris Harner and Freddie Fu in Pittsburgh, Tom Minas and Dick Scott in Boston, Lars Engebretsen in Oslo, and Chris Dodd in Oxford.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Porteous holds a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering, with a thesis on meniscal repair techniques. His contribution to knee research has earned national and European accolades, including the BASK President’s Medal. He serves on the editorial board of The Knee journal and reviews for leading journals such as the Bone & Joint Journal and the European Journal of Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy.
Mr Porteous remains actively engaged in research, teaching and international collaboration. He has published widely in the field of knee surgery and regularly lectures across the UK and abroad.
