Mr Abhijit Dey is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, with a specialist interest in complex hip and knee disorders in children and adults. His practice encompasses the entire spectrum of lower limb problems, ranging from sports injuries requiring arthroscopic (‘keyhole') reconstruction, to hip and knee arthroplasty (replacement) for degenerative diseases.
Mr Dey completed his initial training in Medicine at the University of Cardiff (formerly the University of Wales College of Medicine), graduating in 1995. He completed his General Surgical Training in Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea, culminating in Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCSEng).
Mr Dey then went on to complete a two-year Clinical Research Fellowship at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases, leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Sheffield. His MD thesis, ‘Bone Mass and Fracture Risk', is based upon research involving approximately 6000 patients recruited at 13 centres worldwide. This research was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Medical Research Council (MRC).
Mr Dey completed his specialist Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the Leicester region. His training included experience in all paediatric and adult subspecialties within Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as specialised training in hip and knee surgery. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS(Tr&Orth)), the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), and was admitted to the GMC Specialist Register.
Following completion of his UK training, Mr Dey elected to gain additional experience working at specialist centres in Australia and Canada. He therefore undertook a one-year Clinical Fellowship in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at the Calvary Hospital in Canberra, Australia, followed by a six-month Clinical Fellowship in Knee Surgery and Sports Injuries at the Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre) in Toronto, Canada. His role in these fellowships included training other surgeons in hip and knee surgery, bettering his own skills and knowledge, and mentoring other surgeons.
Mr Dey was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2009. In his arthroplasty practice, he performs primary and revision (‘redo') hip and knee replacements, using cemented and cementless prostheses. He offers both unicompartmental (‘partial') and total joint arthroplasty depending upon the patient's needs. In his sports injuries practice, Mr Dey performs arthroscopic ligament reconstruction, cartilage and meniscal surgery, and realignment procedures. His trauma practice includes general trauma, as well as more challenging problems such as multiligament injuries, and periprosthetic fractures.
Mr Dey is a keen educator and training of health professionals, both in the UK and abroad, forms a large part of his responsibilities. This ranges from teaching family doctors to perform injections, to training other surgeons in the techniques of knee and hip surgery. At undergraduate level, he is involved in teaching medical students from King's College Medical School, and the Kent and Medway Medical School. Mr Dey has a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) awarded by the University of Dundee. He also has a Masters in Leadership (MA) from Henley Business School, Chartered Manager (CMgr) status, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI).
