Dr Joseph El-Khoury is a Lebanese British Consultant Psychiatrist with more than 13 years of specialist experience in Adult and Addiction Psychiatry
He is the co-founder and medical director of the newly established Valens Clinic in Dubai. He is the former chief of the department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Health at American Hospital Dubai.
Dr El-Khoury obtained his primary medical degree from St George's University, School of Medicine in 2002. Shortly after he became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK. He completed a postgraduate certificate in Evidence-Based Psychological Therapies in 2007 from the University of Reading, UK. He later was registered as a Specialist in Psychiatry by the General Medical Council, UK in 2010.
After qualifying he practised as a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK NHS for 2 years before relocating to Lebanon in 2012. In Lebanon he practised at St George Hospital University Medical Centre (SGHUMC/University of Balamand) followed by the American University of Beirut Medical Centre (AUBMC) for 6 years where he held the position of Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and assumed several leadership positions including founding director of the Psychosis Recovery Outreach Program (PROP) and director of the residency training program. He was also responsible for clinical quality and specialist outpatient procedures. He moved to Dubai in early 2021 to take up his current appointment.
In 2019, Dr El-Khoury was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) for his contribution to advancing mental health, and completed a Master's degree in War and Psychiatry at King's College London (KCL).
In his previous and current practice, Dr El-Khoury has been involved in developing and managing specialist multidisciplinary treatment services for addiction, mood disorders and psychotic disorders. He has expertise in addiction medicine and all adult psychiatric disorders with a special interests in adult ADHD, anxiety, psychotic disorders and the use of novel interventions for treatment resistant depression.
Dr El-Khoury is actively involved in research and has published over 50 academic papers. Additional activities include as invited speaker at national and international conferences in addition to regular media appearances on mental health and related topics.
