Dr John Limbers, MB BS (Hons 1) FRACS FAOrthA, is a highly accomplished Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon with expertise in Mako robotic anterior hip replacement, Mako robotic knee replacement and foot and ankle surgery. He completed his medical education with First Class Honours at the University of New South Wales before undergoing rigorous training in orthopaedic surgery through the Australian Orthopaedic Association training program in Sydney. In 2003, he obtained his Fellowship (FRACS) with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr. Limbers further honed his skills through international sub-specialty surgical experience at renowned institutions such as Addenbrooke’s University Hospital in Cambridge, England, and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. His training focused on hip and knee replacement surgery, as well as reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, at high-volume surgical centres.
With over 20 years of experience in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Limbers has performed over 4,000 hip and knee replacement procedures. He is accredited as a robotic surgeon and has a particular interest in Mako robotic anterior hip replacement and Mako knee replacement surgery. Notably, he was the first surgeon in New South Wales to perform a Mako robotic total knee replacement operation outside of pre-release clinical trials. He has performed over 2000 Mako robotic joint replacements. He a member of the Stryker surgeon teaching and certification faculty for Mako hip and knee replacement. He is also a member of the Stryker Direct Anterior Hip Replacement teaching faculty. In these capacities he has lectured and instructed hundreds of orthopaedic surgeons around Australia in these surgical techniques.
Dr. Limbers has been involved in research on robotically assisted joint replacement and is recognised for his contributions to advancing surgical techniques in this field. He has performed one of the largest series of robotically assisted joint replacements in Australia, including Mako robotic anterior hip replacement surgeries in New South Wales. He is a major surgical contributor to the RASKAL trial, assessing the potential benefits of robotic assistance in Kinematic and Mechanically aligned total knee replacement surgery. He is currently undertaking research in Mako Enhanced Functional Planning in anterior total hip replacement surgery.
His approach to total knee replacement surgery utilises a lateral incision (on the outer side if the knee), resulting in no scar or numbness over the front of the knee. This has been shown to allow comfortable kneeling after total knee replacement surgery. Dr. Limbers also specialises in minimally invasive anterior approach total hip replacement surgery, offering patients accelerated rehabilitation and reduced post-operative pain.
Apart from his surgical expertise, Dr. Limbers is actively involved in research and training. He has served as an Australian Orthopaedic Association Director of Training, contributing to the selection and training of orthopaedic trainees. He has presented at numerous national and international meetings and has published clinical research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
