Dr Watkin was appointed Consultant in 2009 and his and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and subsequently a Honorary Associate Professor.

He has been awarded a fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology for his contribution to cardiovascular health and scientific excellence.

He is a ex clinical service lead for cardiology at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation trust and current Cardiac Services Network Chair. He is an accredited consultant appraiser and an examiner for the University of Birmingham Medical School. Dr Watkin is a topic experts for NICE and a reviewer for the National Institute for Health Research.
