Dr. Mallika Sekhar is a qualified physician who graduated from Grant Medical College at the University of Bombay. She has received additional training in Mumbai and Vellore, India; at the NIH in Bethesda, U.S.; as well as in London, UK. Since 2011, Dr. Sekhar has been working as a Consultant Haematologist for Royal Free London NHS Trust and also works at University College Hospital since 2014. In addition, she is an honorary associate Professor at University College London medical school. Prior to joining the Royal Free, between 1995-2011 she worked as a consultant Haematologist at West Middlesex University Hospital. Complex anaemia, cytopaenias, high blood counts & chronic marrow disorders are some interests encompassed within her clinical research. In addition to leading transfusion & immune hematology services, Dr. Sekhar was recently co-leading a myeloproliferative neoplasms service.
Dr. Sekhar has developed a multidisciplinary service for patients with myeloproliferative diseases and abdominal vein thrombosis, as well as establishing the U.K.'s Mascot registry for this rare condition. Over the course of her career, she has published more than 50 papers on these topics and contributed to national policies on blood safety. Additionally, Dr. Sekhar has served on the board of the National Blood Authority of England and Wales as a non-executive member and has also been a committee member of SaBTO. Currently, she teaches Haematology to students and trainees while also being a lead examiner for FRCPAth Transfusion section exams. Both Harvard University (where she completed training in Media & Medicine) and Faber Academy's creative writing program can count Dr. Sekhar among their alumni. Her research interests also include medical error; most recently producing a podcast series called 'The Bitter Pill' on this same topic.
