About Mr Jas Singh
Dr Jas Singh is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with specialist expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders, macular disease, and complex vitreoretinal conditions. He is based in NHS Lothian and has more than 27 years of experience in private practice, providing advanced medical and surgical eye care for patients across Edinburgh and the surrounding regions. Extensive Specialist Training in Eye Surgery and Retinal Disorders Dr Singh’s early medical career included posts in Accident & Emergency, Neurology, and Plastic Surgery in Glasgow, helping build a strong clinical foundation. He went on to complete: • Senior House Officer training at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital • Registrar training at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh • Senior Registrar appointment in Edinburgh with further sub‑specialty focus on vitreoretinal disease • Advanced fellowship‑level training in vitreoretinal surgery at the internationally renowned Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Western Australia He was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in NHS Lothian in January 1998, and has since become one of the region’s most established specialists in retinal surgery and medical retina care. Vitreoretinal and Medical Retina Expertise Dr Singh provides specialist assessment and surgical treatment for a wide range of conditions, including: • Retinal detachments • Macular holes and macular degeneration • Epiretinal membranes • Diabetic eye disease • Complex vitreous and retinal disorders His extensive training in vitreoretinal surgery enables him to offer advanced care for patients requiring delicate and complex retinal procedures. Leadership, Training and National Roles Throughout his consultant career, Dr Singh has held several influential positions shaping ophthalmic training and clinical standards. These include: • Training Programme Director • Regional Advisor • Scottish Lead for Modernising Medical Careers • Lead Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh • Chairman of the Training Committee, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh • Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at NHS Lothian He played a pivotal role in reintroducing the FRCS Ed (Ophthalmology) examination for international graduates and in developing new international exam centres, expanding global access to UK‑standard ophthalmic qualifications. Dr Singh has also contributed to national training development as a member of the Training Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Current Role in NHS Lothian Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon.
